Pain is no invading enemy, but a loyal messenger dispatched by my own body to alert me to some danger.
The beauty of pain is that it lets you know right away when you are harming yourself.
Pain is a priceless, essential gift— of that I have no doubt.
Dr. Paul Brand, Pain: The Gift Nobody Wants
The definition of pain is "an unpleasant sensation and emotional experience that links to tissue damage. It allows the body to react and prevent further tissue damage."
Whether in common sense or clinic, we are used to considering pain as a disease, a trouble, or a disturbance to life, and are eager to eliminate this symptom. Many of our senses, such as hearing, smell and taste, will decrease over time. We will gradually ignore the repetition of these stimuli. Only the feeling of pain is unlikely to decrease over time, because if the pain decreases over time, the factors behind the pain may endanger life.
The basic definition of inflammatory reaction is that the tissue will be red, swollen, hot and painful. Clinically, many pains are often equated with inflammatory reactions, so the pain of tennis elbow is called extensor tendinitis; Plantar pain is called plantar fasciitis, and there are all kinds of ××itis. But most of these pains lack the three factors of redness, swelling and heat that inflammation should have.
The receptor that causes pain in our body is a type of tension receptor. When the tension between tissues reaches a certain level, it will produce a nerve impulse. The brain interprets this nerve impulse to pain. The inflammation will cause swelling between tissues and induce pain receptors. Therefore, in addition to redness, fever and edema caused by vascular expansion, it will also be accompanied by the feeling of pain. But even if there is no inflammatory reaction, as long as the structure is abnormal and the tension between tissues increases, it will also produce pain.
There are many different reasons for the increase of tension between tissues causing pain, such as structural disorder, edema caused by inflammation, abnormal tissue proliferation, tumor compression, erosion, and so on.

Why Structural Integration Can Relieve Pain
Structural Integration is specialized aiming at body issues caused by physical structural disorder, it could address body mis-alignment, and generating underlying postural issues and/or organ dysfunctional issues. It is a soft tissue approach to recover body's natural alignment. Structural Integration can correct the disordered structure and restore the tension between tissues, so that the pain receptor will no longer send out nerve impulses.
